Maria Montessori was a scientist first and foremost. She approached education through that lens. She conducted much observation of her children. She first saw the children in her care were dirty and unruly. She taught them to clean themselves and their environment (We call this practical life). The children began to calm down and she observed a great innate desire to learn. She began to teach them academic concepts and created materials to help them understand. We still use these materials in our classrooms today. The Montessori method is a joining of how to structure a learning environment and using specific materials designed to make concepts concrete.
The Montessori Method category will help us understand Maria’s ideas and how to implement them.
